Shenandoah, Texas - The Trinity Tigers men and women continued to lead the SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships Friday in third day of competition at the Conroe ISD's Woodforest Natatorium.
Trinity's women, who have won seven SCAC straight titles, led second-place DePauw 566-553. The Tiger men held tight 636-631 lead over defending champion DePauw.
Tiger junior Alex Miranda (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) won the men's 400-yard individual medley, clocking in at 4:05.89. Junior Andrew Battles (Colleyville, Texas/Keller) captured the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.99).
Sophomore Spencer Bard (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (50.73) and broke his own school record by .08 seconds. The 200-yard medley relay team (Bard, Zach Dielmann, Audel Mehrinfar, Aaron Shaver) finished second (1:34.71) and set a Tiger record. The previous mark was 1:35.16, with Bard and Dielmann swimming on the team.
Sean Fronczak (Sunnyvale, Calif./St. Francis) was runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke (52.90).
The men's 800-yard freestyle relay had a third-place finish from Miranda, Battles, Lucas Belury, and Arthur Daigh, clocking in at 6:56.75.
The team of Kristen Zinser, Morgan Briggs, Mary Price, and Ana Price won the women's 200-yard medley relay (1:48.95).
First-year swimmer Melanie Gustafson (Phoenix/Arcadia) placed second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:36.82). Trinity took the Nos. 2 and 3 slots in the 200-yard freestyle. First-year Meghan Varner (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) was second (1:56.94), and Marisa Olmo, also a first-year student-athlete, was right behind at 1:56.96.
Sophomore Mary Price (Springfield, Mo./Glendale) placed third in the 100-yard butterfly finals(59.41), but she did break the school record in the prelims, clocking in with a time of 58.94.
Zinser also broke a Trinity record in an ultra-competitive 100 backstroke final. Two swimmers garnered NCAA "B" cuts and the top two earned "A" cuts for the NCAAs. Zinser's time of 58.45 was fourth among a field that had two swimmers break the previous conference record. In the prelims, she broke the school record with a time of 58.76, then broke it again with her finals time.
Earlier in the day, junior Kevin Martin (Corpus Christi, Texas/Ray) swept the men's diving competition by winning the 3-meter board (534.35), the second-highest score in SCAC history. Last Wednesday, Martin captured the 1-meter event, for the second straight year, by a SCAC meet record 512.25.
The championships conclude Saturday, starting with swimming prelims at 10:30 a.m. Women's 3-meter diving is slated for 1:30 p.m., and swimming finals will start at 6:30 p.m.
Senior Hayley Emerick (Portland, Texas/Gregory/Portland) is the defending SCAC and NCAA Division III women's 3-meter champion.
