Shenandoah, Texas - Trinity University Tigers senior Hayley Emerick (Portland, Texas/Gregory-Portland) won the won the SCAC women's 3-meter diving competition for the fourth straight year.
Emerick registered a SCAC-record score of 530.50 Saturday at the Conroe ISD's Woodforest Natatorium. She edged sophomore teammate Ruth Hahn (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) by less than a point. Hahn, who beat out Emerick last Thursday for the 1-meter title, scored 530.45 points.
At the end of the 10th round (of 11 total), Hahn put the pressure on Emerick with a great dive to take the lead in the competition. Emerick responded with a score of 54+ to force Hahn into another pressure-packed dive. Hahn responded with a 49-point score that left her just 0.05 short of Emerick and the title.
Junior Lynne Bettinger (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva) was third (510.30), and first-year diver Kathryn Sheldon (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) placed fourth (433.85).
Last year, Emerick went on to win the NCAA Division III 3-meter national championship.
Trinity swept the SCAC diving competition, as junior Kevin Martin (Corpus Christi, Texas/Ray) won the men's 1-meter and 3-meter events.
Tiger divers scores will now be submitted for consideration for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The national event is slated for March 23-26 at Knoxville, Tenn.
The swimming portion of the SCAC Championships concludes tonight, with the first events starting at 6:30.
