San Antonio - Trinity's 10th-ranked men's
tennis team lost a 5-4 match to Division II's 20th-ranked St.
Edward's University to open the 2012 season on Wednesday
afternoon.
Trinity (0-1) split the singles matches, but lost two of the
three doubles contests to open the day's action.
Tigers Jacob Straus and Ben Carroll won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles to
start off the day right, but doubles teams of Max Frey and Erick
DelaFuente (No. 1), and Jordan Mayer and Greg Haugen (No. 2) were
edged 8-5 and 8-4, respectively.
Frey (5-7, 1-6) and DelaFuente (6-7, 6-7) also lost in straight
sets at the top two singles positions, while Haugen lost 7-5, 4-6,
1-6 at No. 3 singles.
Trinity's lower half won all three singles matches on Wednesday,
including straight-set victories by Straus (7-6, 7-5) and Mayer
(6-0, 6-4). Aaron Skinner came from behind to win at No. 6
singles 1-6, 7-6, 10-8.
The Tigers will return to action next weekend, facing off
against Laredo Community College on February 11. The Tigers
will also play Texas Lutheran and Incarnate Word on Sunday,
February 12. All three matches will be at home.
