San Antonio - The Tiger men's tennis team
defeated the top-ranked team in the junior college rankings, Laredo
Community College, by the final of 6-3 on Saturday
afternoon.
Trinity evened its overall record to 1-1 this season, having
lost earlier in the month to Division II St. Edward's
University. The Tigers are ranked 10th in the Division III
Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason poll.
The Tigers took all three doubles matches to start off the day,
though the No. 3 doubles match was defaulted by Laredo - which also
defaulted at No. 6 singles, giving Trinity a 2-0 advantage at the
start of the match.
Max Frey teamed with Erick DelaFuente at No. 1 doubles, scoring
an 8-4 win. Frey also won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to earn a
sweep for the day. DelaFuente was tripped up 3-6, 2-6 in No.
2 singles.
Jordan Mayer also won both his singles and doubles matches on
the day, helping the Tigers to two more points. Mayer won
6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles, which followed his teaming up with Greg
Haugen to win 8-2 in No. 2 doubles. Haugen lost 3-6, 1-6 at
No. 3 singles.
Trinity will be back in action tomorrow, taking on a pair of
teams to cap a busy weekend of play. The Tigers host Texas
Lutheran University at noon, opening Trinity's Division III
schedule. Trinity will then face off against Division II's
University of Incarnate Word, continuing a long-time San Antonio
rivalry.
