Fort Myers, Florida - Trinity Tigers
sophomore Paxton Deuel defeated the top-seeded player Friday in the
singles consolation semifinals at the USTA/ITA National Small
College Championships.
Deuel, the No. 4 seed, beat No. 1 Eric Halpern of Emory 7-5, 6-3
at Three Oaks Tennis Center. The Tiger player now faces Luke Trinka
of Bowdoin IN the consolation final (fifth place) at 8:00 a.m.
Eastern Time Saturday.
In Thursday's quarterfinals, Deuel fell 7-5, 6-3 to
Abhishek Alla of Carnegie Mellon. Deuel, a transfer from the
University of Portland, defeated Whitman's Andrew La Cava
6-2, 6-3 in Wednesday's play-in match.
Deuel qualified for the national event by winning the ITA
Southwest Region Singles Championship at Trinity last month. Junior
Brandon Thompson and sophomore Eliot Guin captured the regional
doubles title, and advanced to the ITA national tournament. The
Tiger duo lost in the first round 5-7, 6-3, 10-2 to La Cava and
James Rivers.
