Fort Myers, Florida - Trinity Tigers
sophomore Paxton Deuel won the consolation singles title
Saturday at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.
Deuel, the No. 4 seed, outfought Luke Trinka of Bowdoin 6-4,
4-6, 6-1 in the fifth-place match at Three Oaks Tennis Center.
In Friday's consolation semifinals, Deuel took out
top-seeded Eric Halpern of Emory 7-5, 6-3.
The University of Portland transfer fell in Thursday's
quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-3 to Abhishek Alla of Carnegie Mellon. Deuel
began the national event with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Whitman's
Andrew La Cava in Wednesday's play-in match.
Deuel qualified for the national tournament by winning the ITA
Southwest Region Singles Championship at Trinity last month. Junior
Brandon Thompson and sophomore Eliot Guin captured the regional
doubles title, and advanced to the ITA national tournament. The
Tiger duo lost in the first round 5-7, 6-3, 10-2 to La Cava and
James Rivers.
