Fort Myers, Florida - Trinity Tigers
sophomore Paxton Deuel won his Division III men's singles
play-in match Wednesday at the USTA/ITA National Small College
Championships at the Three Oaks Tennis Center.
Deuel beat Andrew La Cava of Whitman 6-2, 6-3 in the
opening match. The University of Portland transfer player takes on
Abhishek Alla of Carnegie Mellon in the quarterfinals at 8 a.m.
Eastern Time on Thursday.
The Tiger doubles team of junior Brandon Thompson and
sophomore Eliot Guin lost a first-round three-set battle 5-7, 6-3,
10-2 to La Cava and James Rivers.
The Division III singles tournament continues through
Saturday. All NCAA Divisions, along with NAIA and Junior/Community
Colleges, are represented. The respective singles and doubles
champions advance to Sunday's “Super Bowl,” where
an overall titleist emerges. All of the participants captured
regional championships.
Deuel qualified for the national event by winning the
USTA/ITA Southwest Championship, hosted by Trinity, with a victory
over teammate Charlie Curtis. Thompson and Guin defeated Deuel and
Clayton Niess in the regional doubles title match.
Trinity made a clean sweep of the regional singles and
doubles crowns for the fourth consecutive year.
