Three Tigers Qualify for NCAA Track & Field Championships

Box Score

San Antonio - Three members of the Trinity Tigers men's and women's track and field teams have qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships May 23-25 at La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Senior Justin Campbell (men's discus), junior George Warren (men's high jump), and junior Vanessa Moreno (women's 10,000 meter run) will compete at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Campbell (Victoria, TX/Memorial) is ranked eighth among the discus competitors, with a throw of 52.43 meters (172.01 feet). He made the top-10 throw at the UIW Last Chance Meet in San Antonio. Campbell earned All-America honors in the discus in 2009, with a third-place NCAA finish (50.18 meters, 164.58 feet). He was Trinity's top men's points earner at last month's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships. In addition to the discus title, Campbell won the hammer throw and shot put for the conference champion Tigers, who hosted the meet.

Warren (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown) stands 18th in the NCAA high jump field with a mark of 2.04 meters (6.69 feet). He made the jump at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight Meet in Abilene, Texas. Warren won the SCAC high jump title, with a mark of 2.00 meters (6.56 feet), and was a member of the champion 4x400-meter relay team.

Moreno (El Paso, TX/ Horizon) is 14th in the 10,000 meters race, with a time of 36:09.11. Her NCAA time was set at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. She was instrumental in helping the Tiger women emerge as the SCAC Track and Field champions, by winning the 1,500 and 5,000 meter events. Last fall, Moreno won the SCAC Women's Cross Country Championship, and was named conference Cross Country Runner of the Year. Trinity's men and women won their first-ever cross country team titles, and advanced to the NCAAs.

Three outstanding Trinity student-athletes just missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Senior Sal Perdomo (Irving, TX/Jesuit College Prep) was 1.5 seconds shy in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, while junior Jackie Newell (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln) was behind by five seconds in the women's event.  Junior Maddie Murphy (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood) missed the NCAA list by five seconds in the women's 10,000 meters.

The Trinity coaches were named the SCAC Track and Field Staff of the Year. Both Tiger teams are led by first year Head Coach Marcus Whitehead. Other members of the coaching staff are Derick Lawrence (also head men's and women's cross country coach), Thomas Dimitri, Emily Daum, Joe Meno, Greg Roberts, and Todd Wildman.

The Tiger men's and women's teams won the SCAC Championships by record margins (136.5 points and 277 points, respectively).
