Sal Perdomo and
Justin Campbell have been named the top men's track and field athletes by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Perdomo (Irving, TX/Jesuit College Prep) was elected the SCAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year, while Campbell (Victoria,TX/Memorial) was selected as SCAC Men's Field Athlete of the Year. Voting was conducted by the league's head coaches.
Both athletes played major roles in the Tigers recently captured SCAC Track and Field Championships, held on campus.
Perdomo won the conference 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:54.24) and the 5,000-meter run (15:48.52). His steeplechase mark of 9:11.08 took second in his heat at the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays (Walnut, CA), setting a school record. Perdomo also ran a personal-best in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters.
Coming back from a knee surgery last season, Campbell won the SCAC shot put, hammer throw and the discus. His throw of 52.43 meters in the discus set a school record, and was the ninth-best toss in the NCAA Division III. In the shot put, Campbell recorded a mark of 13.23 meters, and went 44.84 meters in the hammer throw.
Campbell qualified for the discus in the NCAA Championships at La Crosse, Wis., and placed 13th (of 20 competitors) with a throw of 49.14 meters. He had earned All-America honors in the event during the 2009 championships.
In balloting conducted earlier, the coaching staff of Trinity - led by Head Coach
Marcus Whitehead - was selected as SCAC Men's Track and Field Staff of the Year.
