San Antonio - Trinity's men's tennis team
opened up its fall season by hosting the Quad Tournament on
Friday.
The Tigers are hosting the University of Incarnate Word, Laredo
Community College, St. Edward's University, and St. Mary's
University for a two-day event.
Paxton Deuel and Greg Haugen both advanced in Flight 1 singles
on Friday. Deuel won 7-5, 6-0 in straight sets, while Haugen
was able to grind out a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 win. Connor Dunn (6-2,
6-3) and Chas Mayer (7-6, 6-2) also won their opening singles
matches in Flight 2 to reach the Semifinals.
Clayton Neiss and Charlie Curtis earned a pair of straight-set
victories in Flight 3 singles, while Pablo Diaz Boom and Julio
Benavides did the same in Flight 4. The fifth flight of
singles was the only one that saw a Tiger singles player lose,
though Brandon Thompson did pull out a 7-6, 6-2 win to reach the
Semifinals of that flight. Iian Logan moved on to the finals
of Flight 7 for the Tigers as well.
In doubles play, Haugen and Dunn survived a tough 9-8 (7-5)
opening match, but fell 8-4 in the Semifinals of Flight 1.
Deuel and Aaron Skinner also opened with a win (8-5), but
also fell short of reaching the finals. The two teams will
play each other for third place tomorrow afternoon.
Flight 3 doubles saw Tiger teams Manuel Brown and Greg Marifian,
and Brandon Thompson and Eliot Guin earn first-round wins as well,
only to drop their respective Semifinal contests. Logan and
Roland Green did reach the finals of Flight 4, though, and are
guaranteed to earn the team's top finish in a doubles flight.
Action resumes tomorrow morning in both singles and doubles
flights.
