Box Score Brownwood, Texas - The Trinity University Tigers kicked off their 2013 football season with a 47-29 victory over Howard Payne University on Saturday night.
Trinity lit up the scoreboard first when quarterback Mason Blaschke connected with tight end Sam Harford for a 46-yard touchdown with 8:20 to play in the first quarter. Howard Payne would score on their ensuing drive to tie the game after the opening period.
In the second quarter, Trinity turned to the ground game for two more scores, one, a five-yard run from Blaschke and another from Jeremy Simmons, from 10-yards out. With just 17 seconds remaining before the half, Blaschke had his 17-yard pass pulled in by Cody Sandman to put the Tigers up 28-7 at the break.
After a Howard Payne touchdown in the third quarter, Trinity's Steven Sannoh had a three-yard touchdown run and Robert Broyles found Weslyn Wagner for an 11-yard score as the quarter came to an end with Trinity up 41-15.
In the fourth quarter, Broyles found Harford for their second touchdowns of the game.
Trinity threw for 216 yards on 13-18 passing. Blaschke and Broyles combined for four touchdowns and an interception. The Tigers also accumulated 241 yards on the ground, led by Simmons with 106 yards on 13 carries. Travis Williams added 64 yards on 14 touches.
Connor Yorloff led the defense with seven tackles, including one for a loss. Tomy Boboy and Daniel Minor added six tackles each. Boboy also had a forced fumbled and 1.5 tackles for loss. Trevor Holt and Bradley Drenon combined for a sack.
Trinity (1-0) returns for their home opener on Saturday, September 14 at 6:00pm when they host Texas Lutheran in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game.
