Box Score San Antonio - Trinity men's soccer players
Johnny Lawson and Tom Carwile head a group of five Tiger players
selected for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
All-Tournament Team.
Lawson was named Offensive Most Valuable Player.
He was also selected for the All-Tournament Team for the third
straight time. Carwile, a junior defender, was elected Defensive
MVP.
The second-ranked Tigers (21-1-0) won their
third straight SCAC Championship with a come-from-behind 2-1
victory over Colorado College last Sunday at Texas Lutheran
University in Seguin, Texas. Trinity shut out host Texas Lutheran
3-0 in the semifinals.
Lawson powered in a critical penalty kick in the
83rd minute against Colorado College, which evened up the
championship matchup. It marked the 17th goal of the season for
Lawson, which leads all SCAC players, and kept Trinity in
contention during the title match. Lawson was also Offensive MVP at
the 2012 tournament, and finished this year's event with a
goal in each of Trinity's two wins.
Carwile revved up the Tiger defense which
permitted only one goal on 21 shot attempts in the two
games.
Derrick Horvath, Matt Cardone, and Simon Uribe
were also All-Tournament honorees. It was the first selection
for all three Tigers.
Head Coach Paul McGinlay guided the Tigers to a
17th overall SCAC title, and the automatic bid to the NCAA Division
III Playoffs. Trinity opens the NCAA tournament Saturday in
Richardson, Texas, with the University of Texas-Dallas serving as
the host institution. The Tigers meet Hardin-Simmons University at
7:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to Sunday's second round
at 5:00 p.m. against the winner of UT-Dallas and Pomona-Pitzer
Colleges.
