San Antonio -
Trinity seniors Yuri Ribeiro and Darren McAfee have been invited to
participate in the training camp of the North American Soccer
League's San Antonio Scorpions.
The camp began Monday, and will include from six
to eight exhibition matches. FC Dallas of Major League Soccer will
take on the Scorpions on March 1 at Toyota Field. The first NASL
regular-season home-opener is scheduled for April 12 against
Minnesota.
Ribeiro, a forward, was elected to the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire All-America
Team for the third time. It also marked the second consecutive year
Ribeiro earned D3soccer.com All-America
recognition.
During the 2013 campaign, Ribeiro led the Tigers
in total points (38), while scoring 10 goals (two game-winners),
and chalking up a team-best 18 assists (third in the nation).
Ribeiro was also selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference Offensive Player of the Year, as well as picking up a
slot on the All-West Region Team.
McAfee, a midfielder, was named to the NSCAA
Men's Scholar All-America Second Team, the All-Region
First Team, and the All-SCAC First Team. He scored five goals and
dished out two assists in the course of the Tigers season. McAfee
also added a goal and an assist during Trinity's NCAA
Division III postseason run.
Trinity is guided by Head Coach Paul McGinlay,
who completed his 23rd season at the Tigers helm. Last fall, the
Tigers (21-3-1) advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the eighth
time. Trinity captured a 16th SCAC Championship, and competed in
the NCAA Tournament for the 12th straight occasion. At
season's end, the Tigers were ranked fourth by D3soccer.com,
and sixth by the NSCAA.
The Tigers captured the NCAA Division III Championship in
2003, becoming the only Texas soccer team - in any division - to
attain the feat.
