- The Trinity Tigers
men's and women's track and field teams hosted their
first meet of the season, and exhibited excellent performances at
the Trinity Open on Saturday at the Trinity Track and
Field/Football Stadium.
The competition was stiff, and included NCAA
Division II school Angelo State University, along with Division III
teams and skilled unattached participants. But Trinity
student-athletes more than held their own throughout the
meet.
Some of the strongest results came in the
women's 1,500 meters, where Trinity runners captured the
top-four places. Vanessa Moreno won the event with a time of
4:45.01. Maddie Murphy was runner-up, at 4:49.44 (personal best).
Michelle Oberndorf came in third (4:58.64), and Autumn Kervella was
fourth (5:05.52, personal best).
Jackie Newell won the women's 5,000
meters, clocking in at 18:52.31, and Genna Primeau finished second
with a personal-best 19:12.53. Kelsey Oelze emerged as the javelin
champion, with a personal-best throw of 38.95 meters, the fourth
longest in Trinity history.
The women's distance medley team of
Murphy, Kervella. Jessica Needle, and Sigala were runners-up with a
time of 13:03.54.
There were a number of third-place Trinity
finishes: Anna Butler; 100-meter hurdles (17.42); Mariana Sigala,
800 meters (2:24.75); Bailey Drury, 200 meters (26.20); 4x400-meter
relay (Drury, Jessie Dean, Sigala, and Rebecca Jenks) (4:09.19);
and 4x100-meter relay (Mary Kate Stewart, Drury, Rebecca Earle, and
Katie Groke (50.53).
The men's 3,000-meter steeplechase was a
1-2-3 Trinity show: Connor Amoruso (10:39.38), Evan Epps
(10:39.67), and Brandon Wilson (11:19.13).
The 10,000 meters also belonged to the Tigers,
as Taylor Piske ran a personal-best time of 32:29.70 to win the
competition. The mark was the third best in the Trinity record
books. Gerardo Hernandez took second place with a personal mark of
33:14.80 , ranked eighth in Tiger history.
George Warren tied for the best height in the
high jump (2.03 meters), but placed second because of a
miss.
In the 200 meters, Cody Wolfe finished fourth,
with a personal-best 22.75 seconds.
Four Trinity runners placed in the top-eight of
the 800 meters: Ian Plantz, fourth (2:00.37); Tyler Patterson,
fifth (2:02.01); Kirk Gulliver, sixth (2:02.38); and Chris Soto,
seventh (2:02.40).
Will Paulus finished seventh in the 400 meters,
getting a personal-best 50.55 seconds. Right behind in eighth place
at 51.68 seconds was Mike McIntosh.
Trinity teams will compete in the Corpus Christi
Invitational March 15 at Corpus Christi, Texas. The Tigers Relays
will be a home meet March 28, and Trinity squads will defend their
titles by hosting the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Championships April 25-26.
