San Antonio - The
top-seeded and defending champion Trinity Tigers men's tennis
team shut out the No. 4 Schreiner University Mountaineers 5-0
Saturday in the semifinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference Championship.
Trinity (21-6), which received a first-round
bye, will take on second-seeded Texas Lutheran University for the
SCAC Championship at 8:00 a.m. Sunday at the Butch Newman Tennis
Center. The winner will be assured of a slot in the NCAA Division
III Playoffs. Texas Lutheran was a 5-3 winner over No. 3 Colorado
College in Saturday's semifinals.
The Tigers, ranked seventh nationally, have won
four consecutive SCAC Championships.
Trinity swept the doubles competition against
Schreiner. Paxton Deuel and Nico Moreno improved to 15-10 after
winning No. 1 doubles 8-2. Greg Haugen and Jordan Mayer now stand
at 14-6 following an 8-0 victory on the No. 2 line, while Charlie
Curtis and Clayton Niess took No. 3 doubles 8-3.
Only two singles matches were completed,
following SCAC Championship rules. Moreno won No. 2 singles 6-0,
6-1 and upped his record to 12-11; while Mayer took the No. 4 match
6-0, 6-0 and improved to 19-2.
Haugen was leading 6-1, 3-0 at No. 1 singles;
Aaron Skinner held a 6-0, 5-0 lead on the No. 3 line; and
Curtis had just begun No. 5 singles with a 1-0 lead when the dual
match was halted.
