San Antonio - The top-seeded Tiger
men's tennis team won a Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference-record 19th league title with a 5-0 victory over No. 2
Texas Lutheran University on Sunday morning.
Trinity (22-6) also captured a fifth consecutive SCAC
Championship under the leadership of Head Coach Russell McMindes.
In addition, the seventh-ranked Tigers received an automatic bid to
the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
The Tigers began the dual match by sweeping all
three doubles matches. Paxton Deuel and Nico Moreno won No. 1
doubles 8-0, and improved their record to 16-10. Greg Haugen and
Jordan Mayer upped their record to 15-6 after winning No. 2 doubles
8-1. Charlie Curtis and Clayton Niess also recorded an 8-1 score,
and now stand at 14-1 with their win on the No. 3 line.
Only two matches were completed before the
matchup was decided. Skinner won No. 3 doubles by blanking his
opponent 6-0, 6-0, and the clincher for the Tigers came from Moreno
at No. 2 singles. Moreno has posted a 13-11 singles record
during this campaign, while Skinner is now 12-11
overall.
Haugen was leading 6-1, 3-0 at No. 1 singles;
Mayer held a 6-3, 2-1 advantage in the No. 4 match; and Curtis led
1-0 on the No. 5 line before the match was called.
NCAA bids will be announced May 5.
