San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men's
tennis team has been named an All-Academic Team by the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
In order to qualify, teams must carry a
cumulative grade point average of 3.20 based on a 4.0
scale.
Six members of the team were also honored as ITA
Scholar-Athletes, with GPAs of at least 3.50.
Recent Trinity graduates who received the
distinction are Julio Benavides, Greg Haugen, and Nico Moreno.
Rising seniors on the Scholar-Athletes list are Pablo Diaz Boom,
Jordan Mayer, and Aaron Skinner.
Moreno was earlier named an ITA All-American,
and was the recipient of the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and
Sportsmanship national award.
Head Coach Russell McMindes guided the Trinity
Tigers to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III
Championships in May at Claremont, California. Trinity (26-7),
seeded eighth in the national team championship, captured third
place with a 5-4 victory over No. 3 Middlebury College. The
eighth-seeded Tigers began the tournament with a 5-1 upset victory
over No. 2 Washington University-St. Louis. Trinity was edged 5-3
in the semifinals by eventual champion Amherst College.
The Tigers semifinals appearance was the first
for Trinity since 2000. Trinity won the NCAA Division III
Championship that year.
