singles players and five doubles teams advanced Saturday in the
first day of the main draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association Regional Championships at the University of
Texas-Tyler.
But the story of the day has to be when the
unseeded Trinity doubles tandem of Connor Dunn and Pablo Diaz Boom
upset top seeds Harry Kelleher and Chris Wootton of UT-Tyler 8-2 in
the opening round. Dunn and Diaz Boom then defeated Brendan
Thompson and Mark Johnson of the University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor 8-3 in the second round.
In singles play, the Tigers hold the top-five
seeded positions, led by defending champion Paxton Deuel, who beat
Ryan Huss of East Texas Baptist University 6-0, 6-0 in the second
round. Second-seeded Adam Krull bested Robert Sheets of HC 6-1,
6-1; and No. 3 Aaron Skinner took out Tom Weir of McMurry
University, also by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Jordan Mayer, seeded
fourth, defeated Josh Ramirez of Schreiner University 6-2, 6-0;
while No. 5 Charlie Curtis beat Rayce Roberson of McMurry
University 6-2, 6-3.
Also advancing to the third round were Alvaro
Hobbs, a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 winner over Ayinde Hall of Southwestern
University; along with Clayton Niess,, who defeated Josh McKinney
of Hardin-Simmons University 6-3, 6-2.
The
second-seeded doubles team of Deuel and Krull advanced, as did the
No. 4 tandem of Mayer and Skinner, and sixth-seeded Curtis and
Niess. Eliot Guin and Curtis Brown were also doubles second-round
winners.
The tournament continues Sunday, and concludes
Monday. The “A” singles and doubles winners advance to
the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships next month at
Sumter, South Carolina.
There are also “B” singles and
doubles, and consolation play.
