Georgetown, Texas - The top-ranked Tiger women's soccer team earned its 14th consecutive victory with a 7-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Southwestern University on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (16-0-1, 11-0-0 SCAC) also registered its 13th straight clean-sheet game, and the 15th overall shutout. The Tigers beat the Pirates 3-0 on October 4 at Trinity's field.
"This afternoon was a good performance for us, coming off of Friday night where I thought we were a little bit sluggish in possession going forward," said Head Coach Lance Key. "Today, I thought we were quite good in our attack, as soon as we made it, in particular in the final third, and the quality of the conversion, and just being clinical in that area. Conditions were pretty tough, with a soft and wet field, and it was very windy, which made for the tale of two halves. We tactically had to make significant changes from one half to the other. But, that's the game and I think that's good for us this time of year."
Brigitte Taylor received a pass from Colleen Markey and scored the eventual game-winning goal in the fifth minute of play. Taylor recorded her third goal of the season, and the first game-winner.
Hannah Hommel chalked up her ninth goal, scoring from the right side of the box in the 13th minute, as Taylor and Julia Camp picked up the assists. Six minutes later, Markey chipped the ball into the net past the defense on a solo shot. Chelsea Cole and Yasmeen Farra combined for a goal in the 29th minute, scoring into an open net after a collision to make it 4-0 at the half.
"I think Southwestern did a great job at halftime of organizing, and re-organizing and coming out in the second half, and giving us some different things to deal with, which good teams and good coaches do," admitted Coach Key. "We had to adjust on the fly and really get hold of the game, where I thought we lost a little bit of the game in the first part of the second half, and we were able to regain it."
Kim Polasek scored the first two goals of the second half, just three minutes apart. Polasek received the ball from Markey in the 54th minute. Markey carded her team-leading eighth assist of the season. Maggie Olvera then assisted Polasek for her second goal of the matchup. The final scoring play of the game came in the 80th minute, on an unassisted goal by Abby Tisdale.
Janie Thompson was the starting keeper, and played the first half. Kalli Douma guarded the net for 24 minutes of the second half, and saved Southwestern's only on-target shot of the game. Dana McLaughlin finished up the final 21 minutes.
"A good day and a good weekend, with one match to play in the regular season before we head out to the conference tournament," concluded Coach Key. "We need to get healty and try to tidy up a few things from a tactical standpoint, and make sure we are just continuing to move forward, and get better from one game to the next."
The Tigers wrap up their regular-season schedule Saturday, with a conference game at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. The starting time is 1:00 p.m. Defending champion Trinity will be the top seed at the SCAC Championship, slated for November 6-8 at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas.
