San Antonio - The 10th-ranked Trinity men's soccer team won the rematch with the University of Dallas by a 5-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference shutout on Friday night.
The Crusaders had edged the Tigers 1-0 on September 18 at Irving, Texas, but, tonight's result was a dramatic reversal. Trinity moves ahead of Dallas in the conference standings with the win, sporting a 6-2-0 SCAC record (10-2-0 overall). The Tigers also recorded their fifth straight victory - all of which have been shutouts.
After the win, Head Coach Paul McGinlay explained the difference in tonight's game, versus the earlier matchup wtih Dallas: "Defensively, we played just as well tonight as we did a couple of weeks ago. The difference is a pretty simple one: The chances we had tonight, we tucked away. The chances we had in Dallas, we didn't convert. So, on the conversion of chances and defensively we played fantastic tonight. I thought our movement in the attack was as good as we've been all year. It's finally gratifying to see us play on both sides of ball for two halves of soccer together. It was a great night for the boys. I'm proud of them."
Emmanuel Raranje took advantage of his first start of the season by scoring the eventual game-winner in the 10th minute of play. Daniel Ruano crossed the ball from the right side into the box, and Raranje redirected it with a header past the goalkeeper in the right corner of the goal.
That score proved to be the lone goal of the first half, as the Tigers took the 1-0 lead into halftime. After the break, Trinity exploded with a flurry of goals from four different players to end any chance of a dramatic comeback by Dallas.
Ruano opeend the scoring in the 57th minute, converting on a corner kick from Christian Sakshaug. It was the first of two consecutive assists for Sakshaug, who also supplied a helper on Tom Carwile's goal in the 72nd minute. Carwile took a cross from Sakshaug on the back post, heading it past the goalkeeper for his fourth goal of the season.
Callum Squires scored for the second consecutive game with his header in the 83rd minute. Squires took a cross from Murray Fraser, who picked up his 15th career assist. Fraser broke past the defense in the final minutes for a goal of his own, assisted by Steven Gaunt in the 89th minute.
Chad Margotta guarded the net for the full 90 minutes to earn his seventh shutout of the year. The staunch Tiger defense permitted nine total shots, but none on goal.
Trinity will host 18th-ranked Colorado College at noon Sunday, in another SCAC rematch. Colorado beat Trinity 3-1 on September 20, at Colorado Springs.
