San Antonio - Trinity Tigers senior Charlie
Curtis has been selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Curtis propelled the Tigers to the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Indoor
Championship last weekend at St. Peter, Minnesota. With tenacious
performances, Curtis clinched the winning points in all three
matches over the three-day event. On Sunday, he won No. 5
singles to hand Emory University a 5-4 defeat in the championship
matchup. Curtis also clinched the semifinals win over Johns Hopkins
University, and the nod over the host Gustavus Adolphus College in
the quarterfinals. Trinity won both matches by a score of
6-3.
It marked Trinity's first ITA Indoor Team
Championship, although the Tigers have captured 11 men's and
women's singles and doubles titles.
Curtis defeated his Emory and Gustavus Adolphus
opponents in straight sets, and edged the Johns Hopkins player in a
three-set battle.
This season, Curtis stands at 6-2 in singles,
and is sporting a perfect 5-0 mark on the No. 5 line. He is 4-4 in
doubles competition, with two partners.
Trinity (7-2), ranked No. 3 by the ITA, will
host Tyler Junior College on March 6 at the Butch Newman Tennis
Center. Tyler JC is ranked third in the National Junior College
Athletic Association.
