Box Score San Antonio - The defending conference champion Trinity men's track & field team leads the field after the first day of action at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, while the Tiger women are a close second to Texas Lutheran University.
Trinity's men scored 88 points on Friday, holding a commanding 48-point lead over Texas Lutheran University in second place. The Trinity women's team is just three points (68-71) behind the Bulldogs. The Tigers were runners-up to TLU last season.
The first day of the two-day event saw the Tiger men capture three conference titles and Trinity's women won two championships. Earning gold medals in the men's events were Vincent Omegba in the triple jump (13.06 meters), Taylor Piske in the 10,000 meters (35:08.21), and Michael Erickson in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:50.48). The women's champions were Michelle Oberndorf in the 3,000 steeplechase (12:11.37) and Britney Sullivan in the triple jump (11.38 meters).
The top-three finishers in each event are All-SCAC honorees. Following Omegba's win in the men's triple jump, Louie Montoto was runner-up (12.98 meters) and Mike McIntosh placed third (12.83 meters). Stephen Mason, who tied for the 2014 SCAC Male Athlete of the Meet accolades, finished second in the shot put (12.15 meters). Miro Ronac Giannone took second place in the pole vault (3.95 meters), and Lars Besselaar was third (3.80 meters).
Daniel Henkes placed second in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:00.15), and Brandon Douglas was a third-place finisher in the 10,000 meters (37:12.95). Emma MacEachern was runner-up to Oberndorf in the women's 3,000 steeplechase (12:15.16). Genevieve Primeau picked up All-SCAC recognition with a third-place performance in the women's 10,000 meters (41:11.98).
Faith Deckard was the second-place finisher in the women's shot put (10.77 meters), Taylor Gloor finished second in the pole vault (2.71 meters), and Savannah Seiler was third (2.43 meters).
A number of Trinity student-athletes qualified for Saturday's running finals, as the top-eight finishers of each event advanced. Eric Soo has the second-best time in the men's 200 meters (22.79 seconds). Bailey Drury leads the field in the women's 400 meters (59.52 seconds), and Katie Groke is in second place (1:00.14). Nkolika Nweke has the fastest time in the 200 meter trials (25.77 seconds), and Drury is No. 2 (26.45 seconds). Nweke clocked in at 12.75 seconds in the 100 meters, and is in second place behind the leader by .10 seconds.
Saturday's final day of the meet begins at 9:00 a.m. with field events, and the running finals start at 10:00 a.m. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
