#18 Men's Soccer Blanks Centenary to Open Weekend Home Stand

Box Score

San Antonio - The 18th-ranked Trinity men's soccer team earned a physical 4-0-shutout win over Centenary College on Friday night.

After a lengthy lightning delay in the women's game earlier this evening, the men kicked off their match against the Centenary Gents 90 minutes later than expected.

The Tigers did not let the delay slow them down, however, as they came out attacking the goal, and put the game out of reach after the opening frame. The Tigers held a 3-0 lead while recording ten shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of action.

Despite several opportunities in the second half, Trinity managed just one more score in the game, but more importantly, the defense held Centenary to just one shot in the second period to keep the visitors without a score.

The opening goal of the game came after Trinity earned a free kick just outside the box. Three Tigers stood around the ball, but it was Daniel Ruano who stepped up and took the shot. His ball was saved by the Centenary goalkeeper, and bounded off the crossbar.  Derrick Horvath was there for the rebound goal, making it 1-0 Tigers on the successful header.

The second goal came from Ryan Hunter on an assist from fellow first-year Christian Sakshaug. Sakshaug put the ball on Hunter who was making a run down the right wing. Hunter dribbled to the corner and got off a shot that skipped across the face of goal and into the bottom left corner of the net.

Callum Squires entered the game for Horvath in the 30th minute, and seconds later he got a long ball over the top from Chris Madden on the right wing. He settled it and rocketed a one-touch shot towards the far post and into the back of the net for the 3-0 advantage.

Shortly after a missed penalty in the second half by the Tigers, Emmanuel Raranje finished off the scoring in the 59th minute.  He took the ball, cut back in the box and fired a stunning goal low to the far post past the outstretched hands of the diving goalie for the Gents.

Trinity improved to 6-2-0 overall and 2-2-0 in SCAC play this season, snapping a two-game slide. The win was their fifth shutout of the young season.  The Tigers continue the conference weekend by hosting Austin College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Head Coach Paul McGinlay was encouraged by his team's ability to move forward after the road losses last weekend.  "I think it was a huge disappointment on the team with back-to-back losses. But, the bounce back in training this week told me that there is a lot of head to this squad. It is a young group, and we were able to put the disappointment behind us, and come out and maybe play some of our best football of the season. Passing, receiving, and moving were probably our best effort of the year thus far. Like I said, I am really happy with the way they bounced back in training this week. The fact they were able to turn that into a great team performance was very encouraging."
