San Antonio - Lightning and rain delayed matches Friday at Trinity's courts, but five Tiger men's players advanced to the third round of “A” Singles at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region Championships.
Top-seeded Adam Krull, the defending regional singles champion, defeated Jacob Van der Schans of the University of the Texas-Tyler 6-1, 6-0 in the second round Friday. No. 2 Paxton Deuel was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Ryan Beene of Texas Lutheran University, and seventh-seeded Chas Mayer bested Jose McIntyre of Ut-Tyler 6-3, 6-1. Newcomer Wilson Lambeth, seeded eighth, defeated Schreiner University's Josh Ramirez 6-1, 6-0, and No. 11 Matt Tyer beat Tyler Wilke of Southwestern University 6-2, 6-2.
One round of doubles was played Friday, with some matches spilling over past midnight. Among the winners from Trinity was the top-seeded team of Eliot Guin and Mayer, which beat Kie Jones and Ethan Rodriguez of McMurry University 8-1.The fourth-seeded tandem of Deuel and Clayton Niess came out on top of Ryan Morton and Kalee Kuhn of the University of Texas-Dallas 8-1. Lambeth and Cameron Bilsbarrow defeated Sam McCready and Wilkie of Southwestern 8-5.
The third round of main-draw singles will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, and the doubles second round will be scheduled. There is also competition in “B” and “C” Singles, as well as “B” Doubles, along with consolation play in the singles events. The “A” Singles and Doubles winners, to be determined Sunday, advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships October 15-18 at Sumter, South Carolina.
