Box Score San Antonio - The Trinity men and women will defend their conference titles at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships in Seguin, Texas, on Friday and Saturday.
Bulldog Stadium at Texas Lutheran University is the site of this year's event. The track competition begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday, and field events get under way at 9:00 a.m. Saturday's schedule has field events starting at 9:00 a.m., and track at 10:00 a.m.
Fourth-year Head Coach Marcus Whitehead has guided the Tiger men to three consecutive SCAC Championships. Coach Whitehead has also led Trinity's women's team to the top slot for two of the last three seasons.
The Trinity University Track & Field Stadium had served as the Championships location for the last three seasons. Last year, the Tiger men tallied 269 points for their 10th overall title. Trinity's women's squad rallied late in the meet and scored 248 points, for their ninth team championship. All told, Trinity's men finished first in 12 events, and had 27 All-SCAC performances. The Tiger women won 11 conference titles, and had 22 All-SCAC honorees.
Coach Whitehead and his assistant coaches were named the SCAC Men's and Women's Staff of the Year. Senior Bailey Drury was elected the SCAC Women's Track Athlete of the Year. Sophomore Nkolika Nweke was tabbed as the conference Women's Newcomer of the Year, during her first season of collegiate competition.
Drury scored a championship-high 29 points. She was the SCAC champion in the 400-meter dash, and was part of the gold medal 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams. Drury earned additional recognition after finishing second in the 200-meter dash, and third in the 100-meter dash. She leads the conference in the 200 meters and 400 meters. Nweke swept the 100 and 200-meter races, as well as joining Drury on the 4x100-meter relay quartet. She is currently ranked 28th in the 100 meters in the NCAA Division III.
Sophomore Britney Sullivan won the SCAC women's long jump and triple jump. The versatile Sullivan also contributed to the success of the 4x100-meter relay. Sullivan qualified for the triple jump at NCAA Outdoor Championships in Canton, New York, and finished 19th. Last month, Sullivan placed 13th in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships at Grinnell, Iowa. Sullivan is ranked 11th nationally in the triple jump, and 25th in the long jump.
Senior Mariana Sigala is the reigning SCAC champion of the 1,500 meters and the 5,000 meters. Sigala leads the conference in the 800-meter event. Junior Katie Groke is tops in the 400-meter hurdles and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. First-year Mia Loseff is ranked first in the pole vault. Loseff's classmates Abigail Schneebeck, Natalie Geisler, and Molly McCullough are rated first in the SCAC 100-meter hurdles, 1,500 meters, and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively. The 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay squads are also the best in the conference.
Sophomore Miro Ronac Giannone was the second-highest men's points winner at the 2015 SCAC meet, with 24.50 to his credit. Ronac Giannone won the javelin, and ran the anchor post in the champion 4x400-meter relay team. Sophomore Matt Love won the discus, and senior Vincent Omegba took home first place in the triple jump. Love is ranked 21st in the discus on the national list.
Senior Taylor Piske is the defending SCAC champion of the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Piske is 13th in the 10k in the NCAA. Sophomore Michael Erickson won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and is #32 in the nation. Junior Austin Brown won the 1,500 meters, and leads the SCAC in the event, as well as the 5k. Eric Booker, a speedy junior, was the champ of the 100 meters, and is 38th nationally. Booker also holds a #28 ranking in the 200 meters. Sophomore Cody Hall is ranked nationally in three events, the 110-meter hurdles (#9), long jump (#10), and 400-meter hurdles (#16).
Qualifiers will advance to the NCAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 26-28 at Waverly, Iowa.
