Tiger Track & Field Leads After Day One at SCAC Championships

Box Score

Seguin, Texas - The defending champion Trinity men's and women's teams hold first-day leads at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships after Friday's competition.

After six events at Bulldog Stadium, the Tiger men scored 75 points, leading host Texas Lutheran University by nine points. Trinity's women's team chalked up 72 points, and leads TLU by a 14-point margin.

"It was a solid day today," said Head Coach Marcus Whitehead. "I think, for the most part, we are where we thought we were going to be in regards to finals, and how many day one points. We are in a nice position with a small lead, but we can't get too comfortable, as there is a lot of meet left. Overall, I am happy with the effort, but we need to go for broke tomorrow to win this meet."

The Tiger men took the top three spots in the 10,000 meters. Taylor Piske won the event for the second consecutive year, posting a time of 32:41.61. Also earning All-SCAC honors were Oliver Langselius and Brian Wontgchotigul. Michael Erickson won the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the second straight year, clocking in at 9:47.78. Jacob Hammond was runner-up to his teammate by two seconds.

Britney Sullivan again won the women's triple jump, with a mark of 11.30 meters. Mia Loseff emerged as the pole vault champion, at 3.28 meters. Trinity's women went 1-2-3 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Molly McCullough recording the top time of 12:26.84. Natalie Geisler was less than a second behind, followed by Shelby Kallus.

The busiest day of the meet is Saturday, with field events getting under way at 9:00 a.m., and the track competition at 10:00 a.m. A number of trials were held Friday, with Tigers leading the way. Nkolika Nweke had the best qualifying times in the women's 100 meters (12.43 seconds), and the 200 meters (25.81 seconds). Bailey Drury led the 400 meters, at 58.90 seconds. Cody Hall had the second-best time in the men's 400-meter hurdles, at 58.12 seconds. Eric Booker ran the 200-meter trials in 21.88 seconds, just .15 seconds behind the leader.
