Box Score Seguin, Texas - The Tiger men's and women's track & field teams repeated as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champions with strong showings at the conference meet on Saturday.
"We had a great day today on both sides," said Head Coach Marcus Whitehead. "We really had to work to win this meet, but our athletes really showed up and were in control from the beginning. It was great to see the team rally on day two, and get into the meet beyond just being an individual. We had to give up some individual event championships to score more points overall, but it's always worth it when you can win conference titles."
The Tiger women won their second consecutive title by scoring 255 points at the two-day event. Host Texas Lutheran University placed second, with 190 points. Trinity's men captured their fourth consecutive championship, chalking up 251 points, to 226 for runner-up Texas Lutheran. Each team won seven events on Saturday's final day of competition. All told, the Tiger women won 10 titles, and the men had nine, including Friday's victories.
Cody Hall was named SCAC Men's Athlete of the Meet, after stellar performances. Hall won the 110-meter hurdles (14.87 seconds), and the 400-meter hurdles (54.89 seconds). He also picked up an individual title in the long jump (6.78 meters), and was part of the winning 4x100-meter relay team (42.45 seconds). Hall was also runner-up in the high jump.
On Saturday, Taylor Piske emerged as the winner of the 5,000 meters. Michael Erickson won the 800 meters, and Austin Brown was the champion of the 1,500 meters.
Nkolika Nweke won the women's 100 and 200 meters, while Bailey Drury took the 400 meters. Natalie Geisler finished first in the 1,500 meters. The Tiger women won two relay events, the 4x100-meters and the 4x400-meters, and Britney Sullivan was tops in the long jump.
"We had numerous people win events today, but Cody Hall really put in a full day as the meet's high-point scorer. Scoring 40.5 points isn't easy, and many of his marks are some of the best SCAC Championship marks in recent years. Next week, we head to Texas State to try and build off the positive momentum from conference, and solidify some athletes to nationals."
Qualifiers will advance to the NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 26-28 at Waverly, Iowa. Up next, however, the Tiger teams head to San Marcos, Texas, April 29-30 for the Bobcat Classic.
