Box Score San Marcos, Texas - The Tiger track & field teams exhibited strong performances at the Bobcat Classic Friday and Saturday at Texas State University, taking on NCAA Division I and other scholarship athletes.
"Matt Love really had a great meet, and it set the tone for us," said Head Coach Marcus Whitehead. "Michael Erickson's race put him in the top 30 in the country, for national consideration. He is in the hunt, where he could shave a little more time off, and really be close to going to nationals. When the women's 4x400 came up, we knew we had a shot to break the record. We knew they wanted it really bad. It was fun to watch them celebrate, once they saw the time flash on the screen."
Matt Love threw the men's discus for a season-best 47.40 meters, placing 11th in the field. Michael Erickson shaved seven seconds off his PR in the 1,500 meters, clocking in at 3:53.35, for a fourth-place finish. Cody Hall posted his second-best mark of the season in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 14.66 seconds. Daniel Henkes finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with a PR time of 9:53.09.
A school record was set in the women's 4x400-meter relay. Bailey Drury, Katie Groke, Mariana Sigala, and Abigail Schneebeck ran the race in 3:56.34. The Tiger runners bested the previous record - set in 2003 - by a little more than a second. Sigala also placed sixth in the 800 meters, with a time of 2:19.38. Natalie Geisler set a PR in the 1,500 meters, at 4:48.41.
The teams will next compete Saturday, May 7, at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. The University of Texas is the host. National qualifiers will head to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, to be held May 26-29 at Waverly, Iowa.
