Box Score San Antonio - Tiger men's track & field standouts Matt Love and Cody Hall took advantage of a pair of last-chance meets on Thursday, improving their national rankings to move into qualifying positions for the NCAA Championships.
Hall placed third in the 110-meter hurdles at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse NCAA Qualifier, clocking in with a personal-best time of 14.52 seconds. He is currently ranked 14th nationally in the event.
"Cody had a fantastic race today," said Head Coach Marcus Whitehead. "He has been very consistent in the 14.6's since March, so it was great to see him finally go under that. He went into this race ranked 20th (nationally), so he definitely needed a great race. He has worked hard coming back from a season-ending injury last year, so I know it had to feel great to qualify for Nationals today."
Love was 13th in the discus throw at the Augustana College Twilight in Augustana, Illinois, but broke his personal record with a mark of 48.98 meters. Though the results haven't been posted officially, that distance would put him 18th in Division III this season.
"We had a good feeling going into this meet that Matt had some big throws in him," said Coach Whitehead. "He has been a very consistent thrower, but hasn't unleashed a big one in a meet yet. We will see where this throw ranks him as the results aren't official yet. We are all really happy with the way Matt threw today. Not many people work as hard as he does."
Also set to receive an official bid to the NCAA Championships Meet in the triple jump is Tiger women's student-athlete Britney Sullivan. Sullivan, a sophomore at Trinity, qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Meet last season, as well as earning a spot at the NCAA Indoor National Championships earlier this season. She was 13th at Indoor Nationals in 2016, as well as finishing 19th at the outdoor meet in 2015. Currently, she ranks 12th in Division III, after moving up with her jump of 11.78 meters at the Sam Houston Last Chance Meet in Huntsville, Texas, on May 14.
The NCAA Championships are slated for May 26-28 at Waverly, Iowa. Qualifiers are based on national rankings in each event, and the top 20 men's competitors will receive the official invitation to nationals on Saturday, May 21. The top 22 women in each event will qualify.
