San Antonio - Trinity's Chas Mayer has been chosen as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Mayer turned in excellent singles and doubles records last week, as the 14th-ranked Tigers captured seventh place at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Indoor Team Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. The Tiger senior went 2-1 in singles, and was flawless in doubles, with a 3-0 mark.
Second-ranked Emory (GA) University beat the Tigers 7-2 in the opener, and the eighth-ranked host Case Western Reserve University edged Trinity 5-4 in the Consolation Semifinals. The Tigers won seventh place with a 6-3 victory over #11 Kenyon (OH) College.
Mayer came up short at #2 singles against Emory, but won the third doubles match with Clayton Niess. Mayer claimed wins at the #2 singles position against Case Western Reserve and Kenyon. The tandem of Mayer and Niess went on to win both of the remaining #3 doubles matchups.
This season, Mayer stands at 4-1 in singles, and is 4-0 in doubles with Niess.
Trinity is sporting a 4-5 overall record, and is 3-2 against Division III opponents. The Tigers will play four matches in Orlando, Florida, from March 12-15. First up will be a rematch with Kenyon on March 12.
