#17 Men's Tennis Drops Opening Matches to DI Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

San Antonio - The 17th-ranked Trinity men's tennis team opened its season with two losses to NCAA Division I member Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Saturday at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Trinity lost the opening match 1-5, and then fell 0-7 later in the day.

Playing Division I rules, the Tigers captured the doubles point in the opener with the Islanders. Matt Tyer and Wilson Hamilton lost #2 doubles, but Christian Settles and Jace Akagi-Okuma won the third line. Jordan Pitts and Wilson Lambeth then gave Trinity the edge by winning #1 doubles.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi then won five singles matches to secure the dual-match victory. Cameron Krimbill lost #4 singles, Tilden Oliver came up short on the sixth line, Hamilton fell at #3 singles, Lambeth lost the second line, and Pitts dropped two sets in the #1 match.  

Akagi-Okuma won the first set of #5 singles 6-3, and lost the second 1-6. With the dual match clinched, the singles fifth line did not finish.

Trinity came out strong in the second matchup at #2 doubles, as Pitts and Lambeth picked up a 6-1 win. However, Settles and Akagi-Okuma lost 3-6 on the top line, and Tyer and Hamilton dropped #3 singles, as the Islanders took a 1-0 lead.

The Islanders won all six singles matches, but not without a fight.

Lambeth won the first set at #2 singles 6-3, lost the second 2-6, and was edged 9-11 by a tiebreaker in the third. Akagi-Okuma came up just shy in a first-set tiebreaker, and lost the second set.

Hamilton lost the third line, Krimbill dropped the fourth, and Oliver fell at #6.

The Tigers head to Abilene, Texas, Friday, February 1, to take on Hardin-Simmons (TX) University at 3:00 p.m.
