Box Score Honolulu, Hawaii - The 13th-ranked Trinity men's tennis team opened its NCAA Division III campaign with a 7-2 victory over 24th-ranked California Inistitute of Technology on Friday.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Tigers improved to 1-1 on the second day of their Hawaii trip, while Cal Tech lost in its season opener of 2020.
Trinity took a 2-1 lead after doubles, winning the second and third lines. Christian Settles and Hao Nguyen won the #2 slot 8-2, while Wilson Hamilton and Artur Zigman won the third match 8-6. Jordan Pitts and Cameron Krimbill came up short 5-8 on the top line.
The Tigers proceeded to win five of the six singles matchups.
Jace Akagi-Okuma was first off the court with a 6-0 6-0 win at #5 singles, followed by a straight-sets victory at #3 by Nguyen.
Krimbill prevailed at #1 singles in straight sets to clinch the dual match. Pitts was a two-set winner on the second line, and Zigman won a three-set battle in the sixth.
Hamilton was edged at #4 singles in two sets, each of which went to a tiebreaker.
Trinity opened its Hawaii trip Thursday with a 6-1 loss to Hawaii Pacific University, ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II.
