Box Score SAN ANTONIO - No. 12 Trinity University Men's Soccer defeated Concordia University (TX) Sunday night, 3-1, at Paul McGinlay Field for another non-conference victory over an in-region opponent.
The reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, first-year forward Michael Meese (Williamsburg, Va. / Jamestown), notched the evening's gamewinner in the 27th minute, the second score for both he and the Tigers (6-0-0), which notched first-year defender Einar Gunnlaugsson's (Reykjavik, Iceland / Menntaskolinn vid Sund) first assist of the 2021 campaign.
Just minutes prior, Meese opened the scoresheet for Trinity with his sixth score of the year on a feed from sophomore defender Jesus Veloz (Dallas, Texas / Lone Star) for his first assist of the year as well.
Trinity effectively shut the door on the Tornados just before the halftime whistle (39th minute) as senior forward Michael Somerville (Ft. Worth, Texas / Arlington Heights) registered his third goal of the season, assisted by sophomore defender Jack Eubank (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham Broughton) and junior midfielder Jack Downes (Sheffield, England / Queen Ethelburgas).
Junior keeper Austin Wilman (Esher, England / Charterhouse) made his second start between the posts this season, deflecting away five of six shots on goal from Concordia.
Numbers to Note
Meese was on-frame on all four of his shots which accounted for half of the Tigers' shots on goal. Somerville along with sophomore Joseph Kuri (San Antonio, Texas / TMI Episcopal) and first-years defender Hunter Cain (Katy, Texas / Cinco Ranch) and forward Hayden Fetzer (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) each logged one of the other four.
The Tigers have scored three goals in back-to-back contests including Friday night's victory over University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Sunday's tally marked the third time Trinity has scored three or more times this season overall.
Veloz and Gunnlaugsson became the 12th and 13th different Tigers to collect a point through the season's first six contests, the 9th and 10th to notch an assist.
Coach Speak
"Winning consistently isn't normal, nor is it easy," said Head Coach Paul McGinlay. "We found this out tonight and credit to Concordia for reminding us of this lesson. The college season is a difficult journey and tonight was a reminder that all games provide different challenges. We passed the test tonight with a passing grade."
