Tiger Track & Field Take Part in Texas Tech's Jarvis Scott Open

LUBBOCK, Texas - Trinity University Track & Field ventured to the campus of Texas Tech University Friday to do battle in the Jarvis Scott Open indoor meet.

Senior Sean Majors (Fredericksburg, Texas / Fredericksburg) led the Tigers with a 7.04-meter leap in the long jump to add a fourth-place performance to his record. Majors's incredible 7.33-meter performance at the Wittenberg Opener in December remains third nationally in NCAA III prior to Friday's reporting. Sophomore Casey Hampton (Houston, Texas / Westbury Christian) joined the 2021 outdoor long jump all-american in the top ten with a 6.71-meter hop of his own, good for ninth.

Over at pole vault, senior Tanner Lacy (Oak Ridge North, Texas / Oak Ridge) cleared 4.43 meters for the eighth spot in the results sheet and mark the third vault of 14-feet, six-inches or higher in as many indoor meets this season. Fellow senior Robert Slaybaugh (Missouri City, Texas / Elkins) ended the night with a 14.24-meter toss in shot put to make it past the finals cutoff and place eighth as well.

On the women's side, a trio of top-15 finishes highlighted the day. Junior Kierra Francois (Rosharon, Texas / Arlington) notched a 13.69-meter heave in the weight throw for 14th, a near two-meter improvement on her weight throw debut in the Howie Ryan Invitational last Friday at University of Houston. First-years Joy Areola (Tomball, Texas / Rosehill Christian) and Gish Sainz (El Paso, Texas / Coronado) joined in Francois's top-15 trio. Areola launched for a 4.97-meter result in the long jump while Sainz clocked in at 2:27.22 in her collegiate debut in the 800-meter.

Majors joined up with junior Ethan Gilmore (Houston, Texas / Lamar), sophomore Justin Johnson (Houston, Texas / Manvel) and first-year Grant Bishop (Seguin, Texas / Navarro) to mark a three-second improvement in the 4x400 relay at 3:24.77. The quartet's performance was good for ninth in Friday's meet and ranks in the top-40 nationally in NCAA III this season.

Trinity Track & Field opens the outdoor campaign at home with the Trinity Invitational March 4-5. The 2022 NCAA III Indoor Track & Field National Championships will be held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at the JDL Fast Track the following weekend.
