SAN ANTONIO - No. 6 Trinity University Men's Tennis improved to 3-1 on the 2022 campiagn Saturday with its third consecutive 9-0 match victory against University of the South (TN). Trinity improves to 24 consecutive victories in home matches dating back to February 2019.
The Tigers swept through doubles play led by reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Doubles Team of the Week, senior Christian Settles (Claremont, Calif. / Claremont) and junior Hao Nguyen (Sugar Land, Texas / Strake Jesuit). The duo set the tone with their 8-2 output in the first line.
Last week's SCAC Singles Player of the Week, senior Cameron Krimbill (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain), collected the match-clinching point with his 6-1, 6-3 performance in line-one individual action, only after Nguyen posted a speed-run 6-0, 6-0 from the second slot.
Settles battled through Saturday's highest-contest match in the fourth singles line, though it occurred with urgency as the fourth singles matchup to check into the book. The captain put together a decisive 6-2 first set but endured a fierce vomeback effort from Sewanee's Quinn Wicklund who clawed back with a 7-6 (7-5) second-set tally to trigger the third-set superbreaker. The back-and-forth affair continued deep into the tiebreaker but the Trinity veteran came out on top, 12-10.
Trinity Men's Tennis returns to in-region action Sunday as No. 37 Hardin-Simmons University will pay a visit to the Newman Tennis Center. Both the men and women will play simultaneous matches, scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
The Tiger men will then pack their bags and head out to Cleveland, Ohio for the 2022 ITA Indoor National Championships February 25-27, hosted by No. 2 Case Western Reserve University (OH).
