SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University Track & Field logged dominating performances in its annual Trinity Invitational which concluded Saturday night.
A grand total of six events were won by the Tigers. Senior Sean Majors (Fredericksburg, Texas / Fredericksburg) opened the string of event victories in Friday night's long jump with a leap of 7.20 meters. The returning All-American long jumper's primary challenger also adourned the gray tiger stripes as sophomore Casey Hampton (Houston, Texas / Westbury Christian) was nearly in-stride with a 7.12-meter mark of his own in the event. Majors will be going to next weekend's NCAA III Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for his signature event.
Trinity's strongest phase came in the distance events as it swept the steeplechase through efforts from sophomores Ellie Catron (Spring, Texas / The Woodlands Christian) and Diego Flores (San Antonio, Texas / Great Hearts Monte Vista North), nabbed the women's 10k with junior Elaine Kaster (Lewisville, Texas / Founders) and extended into the mid-distance category as sophomore Madison Habeck (Lake Jackson, Texas / Clute Brazoswood) and first-year Will Salony (Dallas, Texas / Pearce) collected the women's 800-meter and men's 1,500-meter, respectively.
First-year Joy Areola (Tomball, Texas / Rosehill Christian) and sophomore Justin Johnson (Houston, Texas / Manvel) were multi-event highlights in meet. Areola picked up the runner-up spot in the women's long jump (5.44 meters), then followed up with a fourth-place bound in Saturday morning's triple jump (11.08 meters). Johnson's 13.86-meter triple jump, good for fifth in the event, started a string of top-six performances between the 4x400 relay (3rd), 400-meter hurdles (4th) and 110-meter hurdles (6th).
First-year Carter Gray (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep) posted a 59.49-second 400-meter for the second spot, just a step ahead of junior Taylor Kotfas (Blanco, Texas / Blanco) in third. The duo then joined sophomores Sealan Ledat (Richardson, Texas / Richardson) and Danya Selber (Edinburg, Texas / Robert Vela) to form the runner-up 4x400 unit. The latter pair from the 4x4 crew teamed-up with junior Jordyn White (St. Louis, Mo. / Lutheran North) and first-year Jalynn Justice (Sugar Land, Texas / Hightower) for the runner-up 4x100 performance.
The bronze finish to Johnson's credit in the men's 4x400 came with the trio of sophomore Josue Parra (Niles, Ill. / Maine East), first-year Grant Bishop (Seguin, Texas / Navarro) and senior Daniel D'Rovencourt (Fulshear, Texas / Tompkins) with a time of 3:25.55 to round out a solid outing with the batons for the Tigers.
Trinity Track & Field moves forward in its outdoor schedule on Friday, March 18 with a visit to NCAA I Abilene Christian University for its annual two-day Wes Kittley Invitational.
