BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Trinity track & field team opened their indoor season today at the Birmingham Ice Breaker. With championship season still months away, two school records have already fallen and the Tigers are looking poised for a stellar season.
School Records
Bocar Diagana (Edina, Minn. / Edina) set the first school record of the day in the men's triple jump, setting an indoor PR of 14.56m to take fourth place. That mark would have earned him 13th on the NCAA Indoor Championships national qualifying list last year, putting him in a great position to qualify for the meet this year. Diagana can expect to be ranked first in DIII when results from today's meets are finalized.
Halle Hamilton () broke her own school record in the women's 800-meter, setting an indoor PR of 2:18.64 to take second place. Just two seconds off her outdoor PR, it looks like Hamilton will yet again be a crucial piece of the Tigers' dominant mid-distance squad. She should also expect to find her time in the top five nationally when today's results are finalized.
Sprints
Price Schultea (Cypress, Texas / Cypress Christian) set a PR in the men's 60-meter, running a time of 7.15 to place 36th in the prelims. Beating out his old best by just one hundredth of a second, Schultea is now tied for fifth on Trinity's all-time list.
Orie Piken took 45th, running a time of 7.19.
Nia Scott (Dickinson, Texas / Dickinson) took 48th in the women's 60-meter with a time of 8.20.
Isabella Gaylord () took 54th in the women's 200-meter with a time of 27.10, while Scott doubled back to take 62nd in 27.73.
Piken doubled back to set a PR of 22.34 in the men's 200-meter, taking ninth place. He now ranks third on Trinity's all-time list. Schultea also doubled back, taking 15th in 22.44 to just miss his indoor PR of 22.39.
Ryan Forson (Dallas, Texas / Parish Episcopal School) took 31st in the men's 400-meter with a time of 52.15.
Lilly Broussard (Houston, Texas / National Christian) set a new PR of 1:01.21 in the women's 400-meter to take 21st, moving her to seventh on Trinity's all-time list.
Hurdles
Kris Duggan (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) took 12th in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.61, just missing his PR of 8.61. He is fourth in school history in the event.
Gaylord took 30th in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.72, slotting her into eighth on Trinity's all-time list in her first time ever running the event.
Jumps
Addison Doss (Sugar Land, Texas / Logos Preparatory Academy) took 11th in the women's pole vault, matching her indoor PR with a mark of 3.40m. She currently ranks second in Trinity history for the event.
Relays
The women's 4x400-meter team of Hamilton, Gaylord, Scott and Broussard ran 4:08.88, taking tenth place and moving into eighth on Trinity's all-time list.
Looking Ahead
The Tigers will hunker back down for the winter, not racing again until Jan. 16 at McNeese State. They will send a much larger team to compete in Louisiana, including the distance runners only just coming back from cross country season.
