SEGUIN, Texas — Trinity track & field arrived in Seguin today for Day 1 of the SCAC Championships at Texas Lutheran University. With just a few field events on the slate, the Tigers kicked off the weekend in a big way.
Pierce Jackson (Addison, Texas / Dallas Jesuit) provided the spark for the day's competition, winning the men's javelin in a throw of 58.97m. Still undefeated in the javelin this season, the win gives Jackson his second straight SCAC win in the event and his fourth medal in four years.
Ayoob Ismael (Concord, N.H. / Concord) threw a PR of 48.56m, securing eighth and a crucial point for the Tigers in their quest to upset 12th-ranked McMurry University (TX). Ismael came into the weekend ranked fifteenth on the SCAC list, moving up seven spots into scoring position.
In the women's javelin,
Demi Durham (Parker, Ariz. / Parker) took sixth and
Madeleine Seabolt (San Diego, Calif. / Mt. Carmel) took seventh, throwing 27.75 and 27.61, respectively. Durham, coming into the weekend ranked 11th, moved up five spots. The women come into the weekend as slight favorites, looking to hold off a strong Colorado College team.
In the men's shot put,
Aaron Chang (Fullerton, Calif. / Valley Christian),
Xae Huerta (San Antonio, Texas / Jay) and
Caydon Ferrell (Beaumont, Texas / Hamshire-Fannett) rounded out the scoring positions, placing sixth, seventh and eighth. Chang threw for 13.83m, Huerta tossed 13.51m and Ferrell picked up a new PR of 13.32.
In the women's shot put,
Kate Ballengee (Albuquerque, N.M. / Bosque School) threw 11.38m to take seventh place. Seabolt just missed scoring position, taking 10th in a throw of 10.42m.
Bocar Diagana (Edina, Minn. / Edina) jumped a big new PR of 6.69m in the men's long jump, taking fourth place.
Kaleem Howard (Jacksboro, Texas / Jacksboro) also came up big with a new PR of 6.54m to take sixth. Both athletes made major moves from their entered marks as Diagana moved up 13 spots from 17th and Howard jumped up nine spots from 15th.
The Tigers picked up huge points in the women's long jump as
Annabelle Lanik (Sugar Land, Texas / St. John's) took the win and
Joy Areola (Tomball, Texas / Rosehill Christian) grabbed second place. In her first conference championship, Lanik jumped 5.97m, only .01m off the mark that currently sits her at fifth on the NCAA Division III list. Areola, the favorite in the triple jump tomorrow, set a season best with a jump of 5.71m.
Ciandra Carrico (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) took the final scoring position, placing eighth with a jump of 5.02m.
After Day 1, McMurry leads scoring on the men's side with 42 points, followed by Trinity in second with 25 and LeTourneau in third with 15. The women's leaderboard is neck-and-neck as McMurry leads with 28 points, followed closely by Texas Lutheran's 27 points and Trinity's 26.
