Trinity Track & Field Athletes Crush Personal Bests At Augustana Last Chance

Rock Island, ILLINOIS – The Trinity track and field team concluded their pre-nationals season today at the Augustana Last Chance Meet, with three Tigers setting strong marks to cap off their season.

In the men's 800-meter, Kyle Fix (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) set a PR of 1:51.32 to take sixth overall. He moves up to 30th on the NCAA DIII national list with his time and remains third in program history. While he just missed out on the nationally-qualifying time he was looking for, Fix culminated his record-breaking season with yet another PR and the fastest time by a sophomore in school history. With two seasons remaining as a Tiger, he'll no doubt be back vying for the national stage in no time.

Sebastian Langer (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) claimed 11th with his time of 1:53.68. He will graduate as the fourth fastest half-miler in school history with his PR of 1:52.82.

Emerson Voldan (Arlington, Texas / Mansfield Summit) had the big highlight of the meet for Trinity in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, crushing her PR by 20 seconds to take sixth overall in 10:47.97. She now ranks third in school history and 25th in DIII after competing in the steeplechase for just the second time. Her huge jump placed her just outside the bubble to qualify for nationals, so she'll have to wait patiently to see if any runners ranked ahead of her scratch the event. If no other woman runs faster than her as last chance meets unfold this week, she would need three runners to scratch to be ranked inside the top 22 and earn a trip to nationals.

Whether Voldan qualifies for nationals or not, she has a bright future ahead of her in the steeple once she's able to spend a full season training for the event. She'll have her eye on Coach Emily Daum's long-standing record of 10:28.31 over the next two years.

John Michael Martin (Allen, Texas / Lovejoy) threw for a mark of 47.83m to take seventh in the men's discus. His best mark of 49.35m ranks fourth in school history and is the best mark by a freshman Tiger ever. He will finish the season ranked 41st in the nation, and will look to capitalize on a very strong first year come next spring, hoping to become just the fourth Tiger to ever break 50.00m.

In the women's high jump, Sophia Ortiz (Liberty Hill, Texas / Liberty Hill) took third with a clearance of 1.61m. Her best mark outdoors of 1.64m from earlier this year ranks fifth in program history, and she will also end the year tied for 41st nationally. Only in her sophomore year, Ortiz's early high jump successes are a promising sign heading into next spring.

Looking Ahead

The NCAA will announce qualifiers to the DIII Outdoor National Championships on May 15, where the top 22 individuals and top 16 relays will earn a trip to La Crosse, WI, on May 21.
