San Antonio - Trinity University Tigers senior
Hayley Emerick and sophomore Ruth Hahn will compete in the 1-meter
and 3-meter diving events this week at the NCAA Division III
Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Knoxville, Tenn.
Emerick (Portland, Texas/Gregory-Portland) and Hahn (Knoxville,
Tenn./Bearden) start the national event Wednesday on the 3-meter
board at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. The 1-meter diving
championship is slated for Friday.
The preliminaries of diving will be held following swimming events,
which begin at 10 a.m. Eastern. The diving championships will also
follow the swimming competition, which gets under way at 6 p.m.
Eastern.
Emerick is the defending NCAA 3-meter national champion. This will
mark the fourth straight year Emerick, the 2007 Texas high school
Class 4A 3-meter champion, has competed in the NCAAs.
At the 2010 NCAA 3-meter finals, held at the University of
Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Emerick posted a winning
score of 514.15. She set an NCAA record of 517.10 in the
preliminary rounds. Emerick placed fifth on the 1-meter board
(403.25), won by Trinity teammate Lindsay Martin (Longview,
Texas).
During her first year, in 2008, Emerick, was an Honorable Mention
All-American on the 3-meter board, with a ninth-place finish. The
following year, Emerick attained All-America status by placing
third in the 3-meter, and sixth in the 1-meter event.
Hahn will compete in her hometown of Knoxville, and is making her
first NCAA appearance.
She was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Female
Diver of the Meet, at last month's event held at Shenandoah,
Texas. Hahn won the 1-meter diving with a score of 475.80, while
Emerick placed second.
Hahn was runner-up to Emerick on the SCAC 3-meter board, as the
four-time conference champion edged her teammate by just .05
points.
The Tiger women captured thier eighth consecutive SCAC Swimming and
Diving Championship.
Trinity's diving coach is Stan Randall, who was named the 2010 NCAA
Division III Women's Diving Coach of the Meet.
John Ryan is the Tigers head swimming coach, and the assistant is
Leta Gatton.
