Box Score San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers collected
several top postseason track and field awards from the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Trinity's coaching staff was named the SCAC
Men's Track and Field Staff of the Year. Senior Will Paulus
was selected as the SCAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year, and
first-year Stephen Mason was elected the SCAC Men's Track and
Field Newcomer of the Year. Senior Kelsey Oelze was voted SCAC
Women's Field Athlete of the Year.
Voting was conducted exclusively by conference
track and field head coaches.
Head Coach Marcus Whitehead and his staff guided
the Tiger men to a second consecutive SCAC Championship. The
Tigers, who have won nine total SCAC championships, captured the
top position by a decisive 133-points margin of victory over
second-place Southwestern University. The meet was held April 25-26
at the Trinity Track and Field Stadium. Greatly contributing to the
Tigers' success were assistant coaches Derick Lawrence (also
cross country coach), Emily Daum, and Thomas Dimitri.
Paulus won the 200 meters (22.06 seconds) and
400 meters (49.08 seconds), becoming the first male in conference
history to capture both events. He now ranks fourth in the 200 and
third in the 400 in the Trinity track and field history books.
Paulus also was part of the champion 4x400-meter champion relay
team.
Mason tied for SCAC Male Athlete of the Meet
honors with 28 total points. At the SCAC Championship, Mason
brought home the medal in the discus (35.88 meters), and placed
fourth in the javelin (37.22 meters). He was runner-up in the shot
put (11.53 meters), and took third place in the hammer throw (31.94
meters).
Oelze tied for second place for SCAC Female
Track and Field Athlete of the Meet accolades with 28 points. The
stalwart Oelze repeated as javelin champion (36.31 meters),
finished as runner-up in the shot put (11.63 meters), placed third
in the discus (33.35 meters), and was a fourth-place finisher in
the hammer throw (31.93 meters). The Tiger women placed second in
the team competition to Texas Lutheran University, by a scant 26
points.
Members of the Tiger teams are competing this weekend at
the Dr. Keeler Invitational at Naperville, Illinois. The NCAA
Division III Championships will be held May 22-24 at Delaware,
Ohio, with bids to be announced May 18.
