Trinity Distance Takes on California in Nationals Bid

AZUSA, Calif. — Three Trinity distance runners traveled to Azusa Pacific University this weekend to compete at the Franson Last Chance Meet, looking for some times to qualify for NCAA Division III Nationals.

Ryan Tresaugue (Spring, Texas / The Woodlands) kicked things off on Friday night, taking third in his heat of the 800-meter in a new PR of 1:51.07. Improving on his second-place ranking in school history, he came up just short of the school record 1:51.01.

Tresaugue doubled back the next night in the 1,500-meter, joined by teammates Will Salony (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) and Thomas Melina Raab (Austin, Texas / McCallum). Tresaugue took third in his heat with a time of 3:52.51, while Melina Raab took eighth in 3:54.76. Salony came away with a season best of 3:49.22 to finish eighth in his heat. Salony moves up to 27th on the Division III outdoor list for the 1,500-meter, and Tresaugue moves up to 28th nationally for the 800-meter. The pair will likely compete one more time at the Augustana Midwest Twilight Qualifier on May 15 to move up further.

Up next for the Tigers is the Trinity Last Chance Invitational tomorrow at home. With so many athletes on the cusp of making nationals, the final five days of the qualifying window will prove crucial.
